Challenges in translation process of Stephen King's horror fiction and their comparison

This bachelor thesis deals with those issues emerging during translation of Stephen Kings's horror fiction and it provides the comparison of two translations by King's books Cujo and Firestarter. This thesis contains a detailed analysis both of these works in comparison to their Czech translations and it assesses their credibility. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to compare the translations and ascertain, to what extent, do they differ within lexical, morphological, syntactic and semantic level. The thesis aims to evaluate these criteria and on the basis of that it aims to provide the final evaluation. This work also deals with the classification of translators to creative and mechanical.

Typical Features of Stephen King's Horror Literature

The diploma theses will focus on horror genre both in general from the point of view of its determination and from the point of view of its basic development. It will clarify the division of horror genre in popular literature, where we will see fundamental attributes of sci-fi and fantasy. The division of genre into real and unreal will enable to outline typical horror components, in which it analyses repeated archetypes of characters both in films and book edition, and it will explain the attributes of a hunter and a prey, and conception of fear with mystery. The attributes of these components will be applied in the closing part on particular selected novels. The essential components for the whole diploma thesis will be the composition of a horror work according to Noëll Carroll, who describes exact form of a horror work in his study. The differentiation of subgenres will be focused on the basis of the types of Paul Guran, who clarifies allocating of works based on the horror components and their combination with another literary genre. The diploma thesis will briefly go through main former distributors of a horror film, it will be based on history of this genre in literary works and cinematography. On the background outlined like this, it will do the analysis of the characteristic attributes of horror works of Stephen King. The main point of the analysis will be the triplet of novels Carrie (1974), The Shining (1977) and It (1986), in which we can see the attributes of the first early authorship of the author. The diploma thesis will deal with comparison of original novelistic versions with following film adaptations. The analysis will be naratologically oriented, thus it will focus on processes and means the horror tone is created, and particular specifications of this genre are fulfilled with.

Comparison of lives and works of E. A. Poe and Stephen King/ What can make people write horror stories?

The bachelor thesis is concerned with the comparison of lives and works of Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King. In the theoretical part of the thesis the horror genre and its typical features are introduced together with outlining both writers' brief biographies. The main part focuses on the analogies between the authors' lives and similarities in the topics and motifs of their work. Poe and King are world-wide famous horror writers; and besides the obvious similarities, such as the nationality and the choice of genre, there are many parallel events and influences in their lives that might have affected the literary production. The thesis provides a deeper analysis of those facets and it puts them in context with their works. The last part interconnects the findings made throughout and explores the tentative thesis as to whether there can be something that can "make" a person write horror stories.

The Themes of Evil and Fear in the Work of Stephen King

This bachelor thesis deals with the characteristic of evil and fear in the work of Stephen King. The initial part describes the history of Gothic fiction, which inspired Stephen King. The next part discusses King´s life with the focus on the aspects which affected his work. In the practical part there is sorting of the selected works into several categories (the supernatural, machines, animals, space, religious fanaticism, people) according to the type of evil which occurs there, together with their analysis.

These works are analyzed by way of narratological categories such as story, narrator, characters, time, and space. It focuses on differences between literary and film representation, as well as what literary and film means are used by Stephen King or film creators to produce emotions distinctive to horror stories.
